Inauguration of India’s First Private Military Aircraft Facility: A Boon for MSMEs October 30, 2024 MSME Sampark Msme News 0 The inauguration of India’s first private military aircraft facility in Vadodara marks a significant milestone, creating substantial opportunities for the country’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The launch ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, emphasized the potential of this initiative. The Tata-Airbus manufacturing complex is set to integrate thousands of MSMEs into its supply chain, focusing on the indigenous production of 18,000 aircraft parts. This initiative represents a major boost for small-scale industries looking to engage in high-value defence manufacturing. Located at the TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) Campus, the facility is mandated to produce 40 C-295 aircraft domestically, part of a larger agreement for a total of 56 aircraft. This project creates unprecedented opportunities for MSMEs to become integral players in a global aerospace supply chain, working alongside established firms such as Bharat Electronics Ltd. and Bharat Dynamics Ltd. The partnership model adopted by this project underscores the government’s commitment to fostering collaboration between large corporations and smaller enterprises, thereby enhancing India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities. This collaboration is expected to generate thousands of jobs across the MSME sector, contributing to economic growth. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to support smaller enterprises in the defence sector. The iDEX scheme, for example, has provided support to approximately 1,000 defence startups over the past five to six years, many of which are MSMEs. This ecosystem development has played a crucial role in India’s remarkable growth in defence exports, which have surged 30-fold over the last decade, with Indian companies now exporting to over 100 countries. To further facilitate MSME participation in defence manufacturing, the recently launched ADITI scheme, with a corpus of ₹750 crore, provides substantial funding opportunities for smaller enterprises. This program offers grants of up to ₹25 crore for research, development, and innovation in critical defence technologies, empowering MSMEs to undertake ambitious projects in the aerospace and defence sectors. The facility, whose foundation stone was laid in October 2022, is a cornerstone in India’s strategy to empower MSMEs in high-technology defence manufacturing. By harnessing the capabilities of MSMEs, the government aims to create a robust and self-reliant defence sector that can compete globally while boosting local economies.
