India's Defence Exports Boost MSME Growth with U.S., France, and Armenia as Top Buyers

India has achieved a new benchmark in defence exports, with the United States, France, and Armenia emerging as its leading clients in the past fiscal year, according to government sources. This accomplishment aligns closely with the Indian government’s efforts to foster indigenous production and expand military exports into global markets, further supporting India’s strategic self-reliance and economic growth.

The U.S. imported a significant volume of aircraft and helicopter parts from India, supplied to major global defence companies, including Lockheed Martin and Boeing. France’s imports largely included sophisticated software and electronic systems, highlighting India’s capabilities in tech-centric military solutions. Armenia received advanced artillery systems, such as ATAGS guns, Pinaka multi-barrel rocket systems, and Swathi radars, marking a new phase in India’s defence diplomacy.

The Ministry of Defence has actively engaged both public and private sectors, including a vast network of over 16,000 MSMEs, to achieve self-reliance in military production. As of 2023-24, India’s defence production value soared to an estimated Rs 1.27 lakh crore, tripling the 2014-15 figure of Rs 46,429 crore. The private sector’s role has grown, accounting for 21% of total defence output. India’s Defence Industrial Base now encompasses 16 public sector undertakings, 430 licensed private companies, and an extensive MSME supply chain supporting the sector.

Notable defence projects like the LCA Tejas fighter jets, Arjun Main Battle Tanks, Dhanush artillery systems, and advanced missile and radar technologies underscore India’s capacity to produce high-grade defence systems. In addition, the recent delivery of the AL-31FP aero engine by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to the Indian Air Force reflects progress in sophisticated manufacturing, including for Su-30MKI fighter jets. Germany’s recent designation of India for special military purchase approvals is expected to further strengthen technology exchange and procurement ease between the nations.

India’s expanding defence exports not only elevate its position on the global stage but also reinforce its domestic defence capabilities, highlighting the nation’s path to becoming a prominent global supplier in the defence sector.
