Government Strengthens MSME Support Through PMEGP and PMMY August 24, 2025 Rahul Singh Msme News 0 The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has further strengthened its flagship initiatives—Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) and Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY)—with a focus on inclusive growth, financial support, and rural employment creation. These schemes are aimed at empowering first-generation entrepreneurs, particularly from Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and rural communities, thereby expanding the socio-economic impact of the MSME sector. Implemented through the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), PMEGP is a central sector scheme that generates employment opportunities primarily in rural areas by assisting individuals in setting up new micro-enterprises in the non-farm sector. Importantly, beneficiaries from rural regions and SC communities are eligible for higher subsidies and lower own contribution to project costs, making entrepreneurship more accessible to disadvantaged groups. This measure is expected to boost self-employment and foster sustainable livelihoods at the grassroots level. In addition, the government has reinforced the National SC/ST Hub, which seeks to strengthen the capacity of SC/ST entrepreneurs to participate in public procurement. The Hub supports these entrepreneurs through skilling programs, capacity building, market linkages, finance facilitation, and guidance in tender participation. Notably, the government has mandated that 4% of total procurement must come from SC/ST-owned MSEs, a move that directly addresses systemic barriers faced by marginalized business owners. On the financial inclusion front, the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) provides collateral-free loans of up to ₹20 lakh for individuals with viable small business plans. The scheme is operational through Scheduled Commercial Banks, Regional Rural Banks, NBFCs, and Micro Finance Institutions. Loans are categorized into Shishu (up to ₹50,000), Kishor (₹50,000–₹5 lakh), Tarun (₹5–10 lakh), and Tarun Plus (₹10–20 lakh)—with the Tarun Plus category newly introduced for entrepreneurs who have successfully repaid earlier loans. Together, PMEGP and PMMY reflect the government’s vision of inclusive economic development. By combining subsidies, collateral-free credit, and targeted support for marginalized groups, these schemes are not only creating new opportunities for small enterprises but also laying the foundation for a more resilient and equitable MSME ecosystem across India.
