MSME Ministry, DPIIT Join Hands to Expand Market Reach of India’s GI Products August 14, 2026 Unnati Jain Msme News 0 The Ministry of MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) and DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in order to enhance the market reach of the Geographical Indication products of India. This collaborative effort seeks to promote traditional and regional goods to make them more visible among customers in both domestic and foreign markets. One of the major objectives of this initiative will be enhancement of the quality, brand and market reach of the GI products. Under this collaboration, GI collectives and GI authorised users will be facilitated to join the digital commerce platform ONDC and GeM (Government e-Marketplace) as part of Bharat GI. The initiative is expected to enable local manufacturers greater entry into organized markets and to create new opportunities for artisans, weavers and producer organizations. Through introducing these products through such digital platforms, the project can assist the producers to get customers outside their usual environment and increase their visibility. The joint effort is also geared towards enhancing the capacity of the producers by educating them on marketing, quality assurance, and the prospects in organized markets. It can be a vital tool for assisting smaller producers to compete more effectively while retaining the identity of their products. There are various Indian products that have been given the GI tag and that showcase the skill, tradition, and resources of the regions. Many producers in India face certain issues regarding branding and distribution and accessing larger markets. The proposed partnership will help bridge certain gaps by bringing the local producers into larger commercial streams. This is also in line with the overall theme of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Vocal for Local campaigns that encourage markets and consumers to realize the importance of domestically made products. With better digital connectivity and support, the MoU will be able to give an important boost to the GI landscape of India.
