Empowering Rural Women: The Impact of Namo Drone Didi Scheme August 6, 2025 Rahul Singh Msme News 0 The Namo Drone Didi Scheme, launched by the Government of India as a Central Sector Scheme, is significantly transforming the lives of rural women by integrating advanced drone technology into agricultural practices. With an outlay of ₹1,261 crores for the period 2023-24 to 2025-26, the scheme aims to empower Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) by equipping them with drones to provide agricultural services, thereby enhancing their income and livelihood opportunities. In 2023-24, Lead Fertilizer Companies (LFCs) distributed a total of 1,094 drones, including 500 under the Namo Drone Didi initiative. These drones are primarily being used for the spraying of Nano Urea and other nano fertilizers, helping reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve crop yields. A study conducted by the Agricultural Development and Rural Transformation Centre (ADRTC), Bangalore, found that the introduction of drones has expanded the scope of SHG activities beyond traditional roles. The scheme has not only enhanced the use of modern farming techniques but also opened new avenues for entrepreneurship among rural women, enabling them to operate as drone service providers. This technological empowerment is promoting economic independence, skill development, and leadership among women at the grassroots level. States like Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh have seen the highest number of drones deployed under the scheme, indicating wide regional adoption. Overall, the Namo Drone Didi Scheme is a powerful example of how government-backed initiatives can drive gender empowerment, agricultural innovation, and rural transformation simultaneously. By placing cutting-edge technology in the hands of women, the scheme is not only modernizing Indian agriculture but also building a stronger, self-reliant rural economy.
